Matt Cutts has been very busy lately with all these new helpful videos that have been posted on the Webmasters Central Channel on YouTube.
As we had promised, Evolution has been following them very closely and been making you aware of any interesting question that have been put to Matt.
The latest question follows on from the post that we made last Tuesday What Are Nofollow Links, And Do I Want Them? is ‘Will having a nofollow blog harming your website reputation’, and ‘Should you comment on dofollow blog’?
Will having a nofollow blog harm your website reputation?
Having a do follow blog will harm your website as you will attract spammers just looking for a link to their website. These kinds of comments are not adding any value to your blog. This can also harm your reputation not only with your blog readers but also by the search engines. As Matt explains in the video, no one linking to you can affect your reputation in the search engines as you have no control over who links to you. So why should you be penalised for something that is out of your control? Google has always tried to be fair regarding this and rightly so. However, who you link to can harm your search engine reputation. If these spammy links are pointing to sites that are know sources of spam, which is most likely to be the case, this will harm your website.
Should you comment on dofollow blog?
Posting on a dofollow website can improve your SEO but what you need to remember is that the Link juice is spread out to ever link on the page and the more links the less link love you will receive. Since these kinds of blogs are like catnip for spammers then you can safely assume that these blogs will have many links pointing to other websites.
These days blog commenting is not really a worthwhile direct benefit to SEO. You are far better commenting on blogs when you have something interesting to add to the debate. What you will find from this is that you will receive traffic on the back of the comment as people will click on your name to check out your website. This can then lead to a whole host of possibilities.

NOTE: The Evolution blog does put nofollow on their comments, however after you have added four interesting comments then all your future posts will have the nofollow removed to help your SEO efforts. However these comments have to be helpful to the conversation. If they are not they will be instantly removed. So come on, get commenting you know you want to!
