Is your website Google Chrome friendly? Well that’s what Google wants to know and they’re eager to help you get it that way. If you’re a frequent visitor to Google’s Webmaster pages then you might have come across this little box lately prompting you to ‘make your website Google Chrome friendly’. Put in place as a source for web developers, this link leads you to a selection of links on testing, tools and advice on getting your site working better with Google Chrome.
Having only been released recently the browser has seen a lot of promotion on the web and even off it (unusual for Google) on billboards and even in newspaper ads. However I think that while these ads spread awareness I doubt that they really hit home with many of the morning commuters. While this web info is clearly part of a ploy to get web developers (and in turn web users) to prioritise their browser it’s still pretty useful. The fact is that it is fairly common for web sites to experience glitches or visual impairment when run in Chrome (more so than in other browsers in my opinion), so it stands to reason that they would put some helpful info in place.
This help is split into sections. First of which is the “FAQ for web developers” page. This provides help in user agents, language encoding, scripts and web applications and vitally assistance with rendering and browser behaviour. As a useful addition they’ve also provided a link to Doctype, a resource created by web developers for web developers with an array of ‘how-to’ articles on a variety of essential topics for developers on web security, DOM objects and how to style your webpage effectively with CSS.
This is all pretty handy stuff and can be useful whether you’re an experienced developer or a ‘noob’ looking to get started. Furthermore, while this is clearly going to boost the popularity of Chrome, Google are maintaining their ‘don’t be evil’ mantra by also providing links to other top browsers so you can ensure that your site has cross-browser compatibility.
